Love, Loyalty, and the Birth of a Nation: Winds of Change
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, I often find myself drawn back to the stories hidden between the pages of history—the quiet moments behind the grand events, the hearts forever changed by a nation struggling to find its identity.
The American Revolution was more than a fight for independence.
It was a time when families were divided, loyalties tested, and love asked to endure the impossible.
That spirit lives at the heart of Winds of Change.
In The Governor’s Daughter, Cathryn Blankenship’s world begins in the elegance of Charles Town society, where expectations are carefully arranged and futures often chosen by others. Determined to avoid a London season, Cathryn clashes immediately with the young British lieutenant assigned to escort her across the sea.
Lieutenant Jake Pennington is honorable, disciplined, and entirely maddening.
He is also the last man Cathryn expects to capture her heart.
What begins as irritation slowly deepens into something far more dangerous as the world itself shifts beneath their feet. As unrest grows throughout the colonies and whispers of rebellion turn into open conflict, Cathryn finds herself torn between duty, love, and the home she longs to return to.
I have always loved the complexity of Jake Pennington’s character. He is, after all, a British soldier during the American Revolution—a reminder that history is rarely as simple as heroes and villains. There were good men on both sides of the conflict, men shaped by honor, loyalty, and the beliefs they were raised to defend.
By the time The Bastard’s Son begins, America has changed forever.
The war has spread deep into the Southern backwoods, and with it comes uncertainty, sacrifice, and the fragile hope of a new nation struggling to be born.
At the center of that story stands Sumner Meador—one of my favorite heroes I have ever written.
Sumner once belonged to the privileged world of Charles Town’s elite, but the Revolution transformed him. Beneath his strength and determination is a man carrying heartbreak, longing, and an unwavering devotion to the Patriot cause. When fate places Jane Kilmer in his path, neither is prepared for the love that slowly grows between them.
Their story became one of my favorites because it captures what I love most about historical romance: two people finding each other amid uncertainty, clinging to hope while the world around them changes forever.
That, to me, is what makes Revolutionary America such a powerful setting for storytelling.
Not simply the battles fought…
But the hearts that endured them.
As we celebrate 250 years of American history, I think it is important to remember that the foundation of this country was built not only by generals and statesmen, but by ordinary people who loved deeply, sacrificed greatly, and believed in the promise of tomorrow.
Those are the stories I have always wanted to tell.
Because somewhere in the birth of America’s story…
love endured too.
