Winds of Betrayal Series- Embrace of the Enemy

Winds of Betrayal Series had a good week. The Cry For Freedom was advertised on Book Bub. This shows the power of a good advertisement.

The Cry For Freedom and Embrace of the Enemy were once one book-Patriot Secrets. I split the book into two because Patriot Secrets was over 110,000 words. That's too long for an ebook. Kiss of Deceit is the third book in the series. The Heavens Shall Fall will follow.

I just want to take a moment. I don't usually say much about when something good happens to any of my books. I can't really, not when I have a cyber-stalker that won't let go of me even after a year and a half. When she attached herself to me, I was told the only thing I could do would be to leave all my works behind and go underground. I didn't do that. I'm so stubborn, but looking back I probably should have. I'm only one person. When you're an Indie, you don't have the support of a publisher. When you're an Indie with a group of trolls attached to you, you don't have a lot of support from other writers...some but nobody wants a group of trolls to attack them in this manner. So they distance themselves from you.

But sometimes something good happens...it won't last. I know it won't—but for the moment...

I just want to add I have had such a nice time the last two weeks. We went down to collect one of my daughters from Old Dominion University. It's close to Williamsburg where Winds of Betrayal had its start. Of course, I had to make a detour and walk through old Williamsburg one more time. I have been there a few times, but I love the history of the place. Perhaps you will recognize a few of the places.

I ended my vacation with my oldest daughter graduating from St. Anselm's College in New Hampshire!

Congratulations to my girl! Proud of you!

All good. Need to celebrate the good times....

Have a good one!

Winds of Betrayal Series Gives Back

I have lived in the Boston area for the last twenty-nine years. My husband is from Boston and it’s our home. What a beautiful day Monday was. After an awfully cold and bitter winter, it was great to enjoy a day of sunshine, baseball and the Boston Marathon. Anyone that lives in this area understands the magnitude of the marathon, even if you have never run a race in your life.

My hubbie was off for the day. It was a holiday in Boston- Patriot’s Day. We watched the Red Sox win with a walk-off double against Tampa Bay. I called my mom. Right after I talked with her, she called right back and wanted to know if my kids were okay. Okay? I hadn’t a clue what she was talking about. I turned on the television. The next moment, the whole of the terror reigned down on me. Immediately, my husband was on the phone. Thank goodness everyone in my family was accounted for and was safe. Not all families were so lucky. In a blink of an eye, life changed once again.

For me the memory of September 11th was vividly relived. My husband lost friends on a one of the flights from Boston. I remember every detail of that day as I’m sure I will Monday. Besides my writing, I work at a major hospital in Boston that received victims of the bombing. When I got to work that night, I had to walk through a barrage of police offices. Quite surreal. It puts life in perspective.

EMBRACE OF THE ENEMY

Embrace of the Enemy—the second book in my series, Winds of Betrayal, is free today and tomorrow. Amazon offers these free days as a promotion to help with your sales. It’s a great way for readers to get a taste of your writing.

Honestly, I feel strange running a promotion right after the bombing at the Boston Marathon. When you set your date for the promotion, you also set dates to promote your book. So the promotion is on going. Sometimes you make money from your promotion; other times you don’t. But I made a decision. Not only will I donate any money I make from Embrace of the Enemy but also the other books of the series. Winds of Betrayal is set during the American Revolution. It was inspired by American Patriots. So it’s appropriate.

All sale proceeds from the Winds of Betrayal Series from April 16, 2013- April 21, 2013 will be donated to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. This will include all three books of the series—The Cry For Freedom, Embrace of the Enemy, and Kiss of Deceit.

If the series doesn’t interest you, I encourage you to donate to the American Red Cross. ARC has always been there for us.

SPIES, TRAITORS, LOVE AND BETRAYAL

I have been asked how I came up with the concept for the Winds of Betrayal Series. The whole of the series is loosely based on the Culper Spy Ring. I had never heard of the Culper Spy Ring until I was doing research on the American Revolution for a book over ten years ago. The mystery surrounding spies during that time stirred my imagination, especially agent 355. Agent 355 worked in the Culper Spy Ring. Her identity was never known. The more I thought about the spy rings...about agent 355...the more I was convinced that women had more to do with spying than they had been given credit.

THE CRY FOR FREEDOM
Given the attitude of men during this time period, I believe a woman could have done a great damage to either side. But I believe the British were more susceptible. Arrogance, an air of superiority, underestimating the abilities of those surrounding them—all qualities that the British exhibited to the colonists. In the defense of the British, it was...is never that uncommon for a power to behave in the manner the British did when one is in control. Although, problems always arise when you don't listen to the people you govern. To be fair, I don't believe the British people had their heart in the war against the colonies. If there was blame to be had for the British losing the colonies, it should lay firmly on the shoulders of King George III. Time and time again he refused to compromise...refused to listen until it was too late.

I'm getting a tad off track. I wanted to address spying during the American Revolution, especially in New York. When I was doing my research, I came across several incidents which could have been due to spying, uncovering plots against General Washington, battle plans... You can find some of them in Winds of Betrayal and the spy network that Hannah belonged.

EMBRACE OF THE ENEMY

A little tidbit of information about the British's stance on women during the American Revolution. General Thomas Gage, the commander of the British forces at the beginning of the uprise, married an American woman, Margaret Kemble from New Jersey. From all accounts the two had a successful marriage having seven children, but it is thought...not confirmed...that Margaret Kemble Gage was the informer...spy if you will...that gave information to Dr. Warren about her husband's raid at Lexington and Concord. For her efforts...if it was indeed true... she was sent to England on her husband's orders. Interesting.

This is the way I see the women spies of the revolution— they were overlooked in the beginning. The British have an air of chivalry that gave women a certain leniency. I believe General Washington showed the same leniency toward Benedict Arnold's wife, Peggy Shippen. Times changed though the longer the war dragged on...especially given the British were losing.

KISS OF DECEIT
Ironic that the most famous American spy during the American Revolution was also probably the worst spy imaginable. His loyalty, courage, and commitment to the American cause has never been questioned, but in reality Nathan Hale was ill prepared to have attempted his mission and he volunteered this dangerous mission. Nathan Hale gave the ultimate sacrifice for the cause he believed in...he was hanged. The young Patriot was treated horribly before he died having been denied. It was said he was denied a Bible, last letters to his family, and clergy. But it wasn't so unusual during this time. Once a spy was caught, he was immediately hanged. It meant to be a deterrent.

Which brings me to the British's most famous spy during the American Revolution—Major John Andre. He too faced death bravely, but his one request was to be shot instead of being hanged because of the stigma hanging carried with it. He too was hanged. I'm going to stop with that thought on Major Andre. He is one of the historical characters portrayed in Winds of Betrayal with good reason. He was in the midst of the biggest betrayal the Americans felt during the American Revolution...the defection of Benedict Arnold...which will be the focus of The Heavens Shall Fall.

The whole of the Winds of Betrayal is purely fiction. It is a product of my over active imagination...it is how I can imagine it might have happened. Remember secrecy was of the utmost importance. It is the reason we don't have all the answers to what happened during the American Revolution.

The truth is we owe a great deal of thanks to the people who risked their lives for the belief in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Winds of Betrayal may be purely fiction, but it holds my respect for those who have placed their lives on the line for all of us to enjoy the life we know today.

Today and tomorrow, The Cry For Freedom is FREE! It's a great opportunity to start the series! It's important in this series to go in order or you will get lost.

My Dog's Named Colbie!

Colbie
This is my dog Colbie. She's part Australian Shepard, the other...it's up for grabs. She's a shelter dog from Tennessee. Really, she's my daughter's, but my daughter at college. I haven't talked much about my doggies for a while. Not like I would have liked. For a year now, I went into a little shell (not my bubble world that I like so much).

I promised myself to let everything go and be myself again. I love talking about my books, other authors' books, romance, my doggies, causes, my family...maybe I just love talking. I have several blogs, but this one was my first. I feel it's my most personal. If anyone interested, you can glimpse what I'm like.

What are the rules to writing a blog? Are authors only suppose to talk of books? Reviews? I don't think so.

I believe authors should write what they feel. Writing is an extension in some or way  of myself. I don't know exactly what being a Romance Author says about me, but is a part of me. Not all...but a part. My latest release, Broken Legacy, is a perfect example of pouring my heart into a project. Broken Legacy, I would have to admit, is my most emotional book. I wrote it during an emotional time and I believe the writing reflects that emotion. There are a few things you should know about my writing.

First—I never have written light fluffy romance. I can't. I've tried, but each time the story turns by itself and I find myself deep in a suspenseful situation. I say this to explain to anyone that is looking for a light read...I wouldn't think my books qualify.

Second—My stories take a life of their own. I may come up with a plotline, but by story's end, it may look like nothing I imagine at the beginning. I also find my best stories are the ones I write and come back to after a certain period of time.

Third—I believe my stories to be original. I know that in the Romance World there is a formula to follow. Sometimes I have...other times not so much.

Fourth—I love to write. It's a part of me.

But there is more to me. Little facts that most everyone knows about me.
Dexter

I'm Southern and proud of being it. No matter how long I live in the Northeast, I will always hold to my Southern roots.

I work in the health care field when I'm not writing. I love my animals. My husband never owned a pet before he met me. I believe in giving back. I believe in helping others. My life revolved around my children and now they are older, hubbie and I are adjusting to an empty nest. I do admit I miss my kids. I am many things but I'm not a business person.

So in the spirit of moving onward, I wanted to mention what hubbie and did the other day. We went to the Home Show in Boston. We had a great time and learned alot. I learned I would love to try to power my house by solar energy. We are getting a consult, but I doubt we'll be able to put the panels on the house. It was interesting to see the satellite picture of our house. It had a clear view of our property including our hot tub on our deck...  I'm afraid it won't be a go. At the home show, they talked like all we would need to do is trim our tree. I don't think so. There are so many and tall, but we'll see.

Another booth we found quite interesting was this one. TEAM 21! I felt like I was on the dog whisperer. Amazing what Dave could with a simple command. Exactly what my doggie, Colbie, needs. She doesn't listen as well as she should at times. I fear I'm a tad easy on my doggies. Colbie is an extremely smart dog. She does need direction. I'm so excited to have found someone that is going to come out and give us some pointers. I will let you know how it goes.

I'm also excited to say I will be in attendance at the 2nd Annual Rock-N-Dock on May 4-5. I love watching dog shows and events, but I never have seen one in person. It should be a great time and Team 21, Dave and Yeager, his dog, raise awareness and money for Down Syndrome. I think that's awesome. I invite anyone who will be in the Boston area the first weekend in May to join me.

So I'm back doing what I love to do....
