Writing The Waking Bell with Jackie Weger
Every now and then, an opportunity comes along that stays with you forever. For me, one of those moments was the privilege of co-authoring The Waking Bell with the legendary Jackie Weger.
Jackie has always been known for her unforgettable characters and emotionally rich storytelling. While historical fiction wasn’t her usual path, authors carry stories inside of them, waiting for the right time—and the right voice—to bring them to life. With The Waking Bell, it was clear to me that these characters had been living within Jackie for a long while. Handing me such deep, layered souls to work with was a gift, and my greatest hope was to do them justice.
Jackie is, without question, an amazing writer. Her strength lies in her ability to create characters who breathe—who carry all the weight of human failings, struggles, and triumphs. As for me, I’m an old soul, most at home in the past, weaving history into stories that feel alive again. Together, we blended our voices to create something special in The Waking Bell.
One reviewer said it best:
“Reminds me of Wm Faulkner and Harper Lee. A realistic and insightful story of Southern/mountain life and values. What a mix of human failings, struggles, and strength. A powerful mix of love (of all kinds), power, judgment, and courage.” – Amazon Review
That comparison alone still leaves me humbled.
The Waking Bell was the last historical I wrote before taking a step back from the genre. But history has a way of calling you home, and now I’ve returned with my newest release: ’Twas Christmas in Boston. It is not only my first Christmas story, but also my first historical in four years.
Both The Waking Bell and ’Twas Christmas in Boston are published with Written Musings. If you love powerful, character-driven historicals—filled with the heart, hope, and resilience that define us—I invite you to discover them.

I love books by Jackie Weger and Jerri Hines, and finding this story was a bonus!
ReplyDeleteThe characters were so compelling and complex--the ones you love...and the ones you love to hate. I enjoyed them all!
Having lived in North Carolina for a large chunk of my life, I also enjoyed the detailed descriptions of Appalachia.
Amazing story!
